This project was inspired by a personal journey prompted by health challenges. I found myself deeply drawn to Chinese medicine, exploring its holistic approach to healing and balance. Central to this philosophy is the concept of interconnectedness, teaching us to harmonize various elements of life.

The project reflects the cyclical nature of the seasons—winter, spring, summer, and autumn—each linked to one of the five elements: fire, earth, water, metal, and wood. These elements, in turn, correspond to specific organs in the body. Through research into the shapes and functions of these organs, I transformed each into a unique design: the heart as fire, the lungs as metal, the kidneys as water, the pancreas as earth, and the liver as wood.

This collection embodies the beauty of holistic connections, blending art, science, and personal growth into a meaningful narrative.

Engaging Mug Ritual Through Ergonomic Design

This project centers on the creation of a mug that fosters a deeper, more mindful connection between humans and the act of drinking tea. The goal was to design a mug that encourages full engagement by requiring the use of both hands, thereby enhancing the sensory experience of tea drinking.

To achieve this, I studied the ergonomics of hand movements, focusing on how our fingers naturally grip and lift a cup. The insight from this analysis led to a design where each finger is placed in its own dedicated ceramic unit. This structure not only offers a unique tactile experience but also invites users to be more present and aware while drinking tea.

The creation process posed significant technical challenges. The plaster model required precise carving to accommodate each individual finger unit, demanding patience and precision. To overcome these complexities, I constructed a multi-piece plaster mold, allowing for the intricate shapes to be accurately replicated.

Each mug was cast in earthenware, a choice that reflects both tradition and tactile warmth. After casting, each mug was carefully decorated to accentuate its unique design, further enhancing the sensory engagement for the user.
