'Es Set' — A Fusion of Natural Clay and Artificial Polyester

The 'Es Set' tea set project represents a bold exploration of form, material, and conceptual innovation. The name 'Es Set' draws from the central design feature — the flowing S-shaped form — which is echoed throughout the design of the teapot, cups, and accompanying tray ensuring visual harmony across the entire set.. The S-shape was not only an aesthetic choice but also a functional one. It guides the user's hand intuitively, encouraging an ergonomic grip that feels both familiar and new.

The revolutionary step in this project was the decision to integrate liquid polyester directly with ceramic. The S-shaped design was first carved into plaster to create the initial model. From this, I produced slipcast forms in earthenware clay. Slipcasting was essential to ensure precision and consistency while allowing for subtle refinements to the final form. After visiting a factory specializing in polyesters, I selected a material that was safe for use in a tea-drinking context. I then developed a custom silicone mold that allowed the polyester to be cast directly onto the ceramic body, creating a seamless connection between the two materials.

The tray was 3D-modeled and vacuum-pressed from a sheet of plastic, providing a modern, manufactured aesthetic to contrast with the earthy feel of clay and the glossy vibrancy of polyester. The tray serves as both a functional platform for the tea set and a conceptual reinforcement of the relationship between natural and synthetic materials.
