'EMANATION' — A Study of Origins, Flow, and Transformation
The 'EMANATION' project marks a pivotal chapter in my creative journey, initiated during my master’s degree studies in Dublin. Profoundly influenced by the rich cultural and historical context of Ireland, I delved into the symbolic power of the spiral motif found on Neolithic stones across the Irish landscape. 'EMANATION' reflects on ideas of wholeness, unity, and flow, capturing the essence of Plotinus's emanation theory and Carl Jung’s explorations of the psyche. The decision to arrange individual bowls into a single, spiral formation reflects the notion that while we may see ourselves as separate, we are all part of a larger, interconnected whole. Each bowl is both a standalone entity and a fragment of something much greater.
The bowl forms were first created by turning plaster on a lathe, a process that allowed for precise, symmetrical shapes. Once the initial form was complete, I carved flowing curves directly into the surface of the plaster. These curves were critical in creating the larger spiral design when the bowls were arranged as a group. The final forms were produced using slipcasting, a method that allowed for consistent replication of the intricate design. By creating a mold from the carved plaster model, I was able to produce multiple identical bowls, each carrying the essential 'curve' of the larger spiral. To achieve a porcelain-like finish, I intentionally fired the earthenware at a higher temperature than typically recommended.
