OVAL VASES AND RIBBS Size: 60 cm vase
Ribs: up to 30 cm
Material: earthenware, stoneware
Technique: slipcasted, pressmolded
This collection of vases and ribbed forms represents an exploration of architecture, skeletal structures, and the principles of support and balance. Drawing inspiration from contemporary bridges, the iconic works of architect Santiago Calatrava, and the ribbed systems found in Gothic cathedrals, I aimed to translate these structural elements into a tactile, ceramic language.
This project marked my first experience with press-molding, a technique that required experimentation, precision, and adaptability. The process began with the creation of a plaster mold carved by hand using chisels to achieve the sharp, precise ribbing pattern. The decision to hand-carve the ribs directly into the plaster was crucial, as it allowed for greater control of line, depth, and spacing. Once the plaster mold was complete, I pressed slabs of stoneware clay into the mold, creating ribbed sections that could be assembled into larger vase forms.
The resulting vases serve as a reflection of my fascination with architecture as an art form, the interplay of form and function, and the intrinsic beauty of structural logic.
