Sculpture in Context, Dablin, Ireland
Sculpture in Context is the largest sculpture exhibition in Ireland. Showcasing sculpture for over 35 years, this annual event is organised by Sculpture in Context, an artist-led organisation, in association with the Office of Public Works and the National Botanic Gardens. This unique exhibition will show a diverse range of sculptures by renowned and emerging contemporary artists, each of whom brings a fresh perspective and innovative approach to their work. Set against the backdrop of vibrant plant life and breathtaking natural scenery, Sculpture in Context will offer an immersive experience for visitors in the historic surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens.
As part of the ceramic contest held at the Botanic Gardens in 2008, I presented a sculptural work displayed in the exterior environment. The design of this piece was significantly influenced by the architectural style of Santiago Calatrava, particularly his fascination with skeletal structures and the organic forms of bridges.
The main concept behind my sculpture explores the correlation between architectural design and natural growth. Just as Calatrava's work often embodies the elegance of living forms, my piece reflects the intricate beauty of nature's designs.
The sculpture is composed of separate ribs made from high-fired grog clay, meticulously crafted to represent the framework of organic forms. These ribs are joined together into a vaulted structure using metal rods, creating a harmonious balance between strength and delicacy. This interplay of materials serves to highlight the connection between the built environment and the natural world, inviting viewers to contemplate the synergy between architecture and nature.
Displayed in the serene setting of the Botanic Gardens, my piece seeks to engage the audience and inspire a dialogue about the interconnectedness of all living forms and the artistic expressions that arise from these relationships.
