KINETIC OBJECT

Size: 15 cm
Material: earthenware
Technique: slipcasted

This kinetic object is crafted using slip-cast earthenware and fired in a saggar to achieve a unique reduction atmosphere within the kiln. During the reduction process, oxygen levels are minimized by introducing carbon-rich materials such as wood and paper, which combust to produce carbon dioxide. This controlled environment transforms the clay body, imparting striking black or cool-toned hues that evoke a raw, elemental aesthetic.

The inspiration for this project stemmed from my fascination with galaxies and the rotation of planets around the Sun. Each section of the piece was individually turned on a lathe and meticulously carved into plaster, capturing the delicate interplay of form and motion. These sections were then cast into plaster molds, slip-cast in earthenware, and fired. Finally, they were carefully assembled into the final shape.

The moment when everything came together seamlessly was truly a delightful surprise—a testament to the harmony of precision and creativity in the process. This version emphasizes the artistic journey and captures the excitement of the final result.
